This year we have finally gotten the rain the foothills have needed. The mountains are full of snow and the rivers and lakes are full of water. Unfortunately, lots of water, similar to the lack of it, can drive pests into your home. Ants, spiders, earwigs, silverfish and more will be trying to find a nice dry place to start their nests. This is especially true in places like Auburn, Lincoln, Colfax and similar areas where we live so close to nature. The pests look to give up their wet soggy homes for a nice dry comfortable spot.
We’ve listed two common problem insects below, pantry moths and silverfish, as well as the methods you can take to keep them out/get rid of them. Of course, the best method for prevention is to have your home sprayed by a pest control company on a regular basis. There are also a few things you can do to keep the pests away.

Pantry Moths

indian meal moth
Pantry Moths, AKA the Indian Meal moth,  can be a problem all year round due to the fact they can be brought into your home from outside sources; typically, grocery stores, pet stores, and big box stores. Once they have infested the food products they can become a real pain to deal with. After larvae or moths have been found, it is important to throw out all food sources not sealed very tightly in containers. Moth larvae can chew through plastic bags and thin cardboard, so even unopened packages may become infested. The most effective way to treat the infestation is by eliminating the source as well as all affected food items, interrupting their mating processes, and repelling them from the areas where dried food and grains are kept.

Silverfish

silverfish
Silverfish are a small, wingless insect that can become common during the wetter months like February, mainly being driven inside homes due to conditions. They prefer damp, moist areas. A good way to keep them out of your house is having good seals around your doors and keeping ground cover, especially piles of debris, away from your foundation. Keeping the plants and shrubbery nearest to your house minimal and trimmed is helpful to keep pests from nesting close to the house.
