We design our houses to make us comfortable. They keep us warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and protect us from all of the elements. Unfortunately, many pests also find our homes to be suitable for the same reasons.
A nest of ants may need to go dormant during the cold winter, but if they are allowed inside they can keep building their nest because of higher temps and more food and water in the house. This can be even worse when the conditions are even more ideal for a pest. Higher humidity, warmer than normal temperatures, too much water, etc all offer various pests the ideal environment. This in turn allows them to reproduce faster, and therefore do more damage.
This house in Auburn, CA was not properly ventilated which caused a much warmer and humid environment than normal. These conditions made it a perfect habitat for wood destroying beetles. As you can see in the picture above, the damage that they can do is very substantial. It can also be very expensive. The piece of wood in this picture will obviously need to be replaced along with others.
